Don’t Buy An E-Reader Until You Have Read This
E-readers are handy electronic devices that are steadily gaining popularity among book lovers the world over. They are compact and light enough to snug it into your pocket or a hand baggage. A single e-reader has enough memory capacity to store a couple of hundred e-books that you can read on the screen as and when you like to. It is this coupled with their portability that has made e-readers a truly must have gadget for almost anyone, more so for those who travel a lot and need a constant supply of reading material.
However, your efforts to acquire an Electronic Reader for yourself can come to a dead end or there are every chances of you ending up buying a device that just not suits your requirements if you are not absolutely clear of what you are asking for. For instance, there are just too many confusing terms going around. So you might have heard terms like E\-Book Reader, an e-book device, e-reader, e-book, Electronic Book, or a digital book.
Then there are a plethora of e-readers doing the rounds in the market right now and not all of them are made equal. Different e-readers are laden with different features, which makes zeroing in on a particular e-reader an extremely arduous task. They are available in a wide price bracket. So while at one end we have the Kindle 2, there also are e-readers that will set you back by a couple of hundred dollars. Under these circumstances, what is needed the most is some tips that can enable you to make a smart buy.
So let’s begin with the e-book, which is nothing but the book itself complete with all its contents and information. It is similar to a real book and contains just as much, or as little information as a real book. Its only difference with a real book is that an e-book is a digital form of a real book. So if a company like the Amazon says that it has several hundreds of e-books, what this actually means is that there are hundreds of title to choose from, as you would do from a library. They are stored in digital form and are available from outlets like the company site. With an e-reader like the Nook , you can read these e-books just about anywhere, thanks to their compact dimensions and portability. You only have to select the e-book or story according to your preference and download them into your e-reader, which can be either through wireless technology or through an Internet connection.
When selecting an e-reader, you will do good to keep in mind the following 10 points if you don’t want to make a purchase that you’ll lament later. These are:
· The device should allow you to read even in bright sunlight.
· It enables you to download a large range of book titles wirelessly.
· It should make available to you newspapers and other daily publications.
· Internal storage capacity should be adequate.
· A long battery life, say up to 14 days.
· Pages are illuminated so that you can read even during night time.
· It records music and can also play back while you are reading.
· It should be able to download introductory chapters of new novels.
· It should be portable, compact and protected against damage.
· It should have the ‘Read to You’ ability so that you can listen while you drive.
As is perhaps evident, some of the topic mentioned above concerns the technology that the particular e-reader is equipped with, while some refers to the range of support services that the e-reader designer or seller is offering.
The world of books is all about tradition and conservatism. And though computers and the internet have made stupendous progress, the same can’t be said of Electronic Books as their development have been slow off the block and is dependent on public acceptance. However, there is something to cheer as the threshold has indeed been crossed in mid 2009 so that we now have some excellent e-readers that also provide support services of their own. The result is, we are able to buy Kindle DX and other such magnificent e-reader devices.

1756 Works: 1756 Architecture, 1756 Books, 1756 Operas, 1756 Short Stories, 1756 Treaties, the Plays of William Shakespeare, Catherine Palace $19.99 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: A Vindication of Natural Society: A View of the Miseries and Evils Arising to Mankind is a work by Edmund Burke published in 1756. It is a satire of Lord Bolingbroke ’s deism. Burke confronted Bolingbroke not in the sphere of religion but civil society and government, arguing that his arguments against revealed religion could apply to all institutions. So close to Bolingbroke’s style was the work, that Burke’s ironic intention was missed by some readers, leading Burke in his preface to the second edition (1757) to make plain that it was a satire. Nonetheless, this work has been considered the first literary expression of philosophical anarchism by William Godwin . Satire Most historians believe “Vindication” was intended as satire, others disagree; e.g. Murray Rothbard argues that Burke wrote the Vindication in earnest but later wished to disavow it for political reasons. Many passages can be taken either as Swiftian irony or as Burke’s realization of the danger such controversial opinions may have on his career:”Far am I from proposing in the least to reflect on our most wise Form of Government; no more than I would in the freer Parts of my philosophical Writings, mean to object to the Piety, Truth, and Perfection of our most excellent Church.” “A Man is allowed sufficient Freedom of Thought, provided he knows how to chuse his Subject properly. You may criticise freely upon the Chinese Constitution, and observe with as much Severity as you please upon the Absurd Tricks, or destructive Bigotry of the Bonzees. But the Scene is changed as you come homeward, and Atheism or Treason may be the Names given in Britain, to what would be Reason and Truth if asserted of China.” Content The preface presents the occasion of the essay as a riposte to the philosophy of Henry St John, |

His style has great facility, and is generally found insipid by contemporary readers; some of his cricket writing has lasted. He worked first in a Brighton bookshop and then on a Sussex newspaper. He was responsible for A. A. Milne teaming up with E. H. Shepard for the Winnie-the-Pooh books. He wrote under pen names EVL, VVV, E. D. Ward, and FF for film criticism. Some of his early work was in collaboration with Charles Larcom Graves, another Punch writer. A Chinese Bestiary: Strange Creatures from the Guideways through Mountains and Seas $78.29 76 b/w plates, 37 b/w illustrationsA Chinese Bestiary presents a fascinating pageant of mythical creatures from a unique and enduring cosmography written in ancient China. The Guideways through Mountains and Seas, compiled between the fourth and first centuries b.c.e., contains descriptions of hundreds of fantastic denizens of mountains, rivers, islands, and seas, along with minerals, flora, and medicine. The text also represents a wide range of beliefs held by the ancient Chinese. Richard Strassberg brings the Guideways to life for modern readers by weaving together translations from the work itself with information from other texts and recent archaeological finds to create a lavishly illustrated guide to the imaginative world of early China. Unlike the bestiaries of the late medieval period in Europe, the Guideways was not interpreted allegorically;the strange creatures described in it were regarded as actual entities found throughout the landscape. The work was originally used as a sacred geography, as a guidebook for travelers, and as a book of omens. Today, it is regarded as the richest repository of ancient Chinese mythology and shamanistic wisdom. The Guideways may have been illustrated from the start, but the earliest surviving illustrations are woodblock engravings from a rare 1597 edition. Seventy-six of those plates are reproduced here for the first time, and they provide a fine example of the Chinese engraver’s art during the late Ming dynasty. This beautiful volume, compiled by a well-known specialist in the field, provides a fascinating window on the thoughts and beliefs of an ancient people, and will delight specialists and general readers alike. |

A Consumer’s Guide to Archaeological Science: Analytical Techniques $54.88 Many archaeologists, as primarily social scientists, do not have a background in the natural sciences. This can pose a problem because they need to obtain chemical and physical analyses on samples to perform their research. This manual is an essential source of information for those students without a background in science, but also a comprehensive overview that those with some understanding of archaeological science will find useful. The manual provides readers with the knowledge to use archaeological science methods to the best advantage. It describes and explains the analytical techniques in a manner that the average archaeologist can understand, and outlines clearly the requirements, benefits, and limitations of each possible method of analysis, so that the researcher can make informed choices. The work includes specific information about a variety of dating techniques, provenance studies, isotope analysis as well as the analysis of organic (lipid and protein) residues and ancient DNA. Case studies illustrating applications of these approaches to most types of archaeological materials are presented and the instruments used to perform the analyses are described. Available destructive and non-destructive approaches are presented to help archaeologists select the most effective technique for gaining the target information from the sample. Readers will reach for this manual whenever they need to decide how to best analyze a sample, and how the analysis is performed. |

A Crime So Monstrous: Face-to-Face with Modern-Day Slavery $16 To be a moral witness is perhaps the highest calling of journalism, and in this unforgettable, highly readable account of contemporary slavery, author Benjamin Skinner travels around the globe to personally tell stories that need to be told — and heard. As Samantha Power and Philip Gourevitch did for genocide, Skinner has now done for modern-day slavery. With years of reporting in such places as Haiti, Sudan, India, Eastern Europe, The Netherlands, and, yes, even suburban America, he has produced a vivid testament and moving reportage on one of the great evils of our time. There are more slaves in the world today than at any time in history. After spending four years visiting a dozen countries where slavery flourishes, Skinner tells the story, in gripping narrative style, of individuals who live in slavery, those who have escaped from bondage, those who own or traffic in slaves, and the mixed political motives of those who seek to combat the crime. Skinner infiltrates trafficking networks and slave sales on five continents, exposing a modern flesh trade never before portrayed in such proximity. From mega-harems in Dubai to illicit brothels in Bucharest, from slave quarries in India to child markets in Haiti, he explores the underside of a world we scarcely recognize as our own and lays bare a parallel universe where human beings are bought, sold, used, and discarded. He travels from the White House to war zones and immerses us in the political and flesh-and-blood battles on the front lines of the unheralded new abolitionist movement. At the heart of the story are the slaves themselves. Their stories are heartbreaking but, in the midst of tragedy, readers discover a quiet dignity that leads some slaves to resist and aspire to freedom. Despite being abandoned by the international community, despite suffering a crime so monstrous as to strip their awareness of their own humanity, somehow, some enslaved men regain their dignity, some enslaved |

A New Reader’s Lexicon of the Greek New Testament $21.36 "What Kubo did for the last generation, Burer and Miller's A New Reader's Lexicon will do for the next." -from the foreword by Daniel B. WallaceImproving on earlier lexical works, A New Reader's Lexicon of the Greek New Testament incorporates all words that occur fewer than fifty times in the New Testament. In canonical order, it catalogs a word's frequency in each book, in each author's writings, and in the entire New Testament. References to rare or noteworthy word usages are included, allowing the reader to quickly identify words of special significance."This lexicon . . . has overcome the noticeable shortcomings of Kubo and should well serve the person who wants to keep up their Greek by daily reading, but gets frustrated by having to spend so much time looking up words." -Gordon D. Fee Professor of New Testament Studies Regent College"A New Reader's Lexicon is a step forward for the student of Greek and is sure to be of benefit to those who teach Greek. . . . The use of A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature (BDAG) is a great touch." -Darrell L. Bock Research Professor of New Testament Studies Dallas Theological Seminary"Very usable, exceedingly helpful, and a fine contribution to any student of the Word interested in serious reading of the Greek New Testament." -Grant Osborne Professor of the New Testament Trinity Evangelical Divinity SchoolMichael H. Burer is assistant professor of New Testament studies at Dallas Theological Seminary, where he received his Ph.D. He has published a number of scholarly works and contributed as an editor to the New English Translation-Novum Testamentum Graece New Testament.Jeffrey E. A Popular Dictionary of Paganism $56.95 This dictionary is a glossary of terms and a reference work whose entries cover the complex phenomenon of contemporary Paganism. Paganism is now a well-differentiated area of religious growth with important elective affinities with feminism and ecological awareness, and is enjoying increasing public attention. The dictionary is intended for readers interested in Pagan thought and practices, Pagan practitioners, social workers and teachers who come into contact with Pagans and their children, and students in the university sector. There are very limited reliable resources available for students and researchers, despite the increasing popularity of the study of Paganism. This dictionary is therefore a valuable addition to the available academic literature. In addition to courses specifically focusing on Paganism, courses on women and religion, on religion and the environment , on environmental philosophy, and on nature religion will find this book of relevance. The dictionary contains definitions of Pagan terminology and information on key concepts and figures, with a detailed introduction setting out the difficulties in providing definitions of terms whose meanings are often renegotiated by each individual Pagan. This substantive overview essay frames the volume and illuminates the context of the individual entries, which encompass the wide scope of the field covering key figures and concepts from the most well-known Pagan religions: Wicca (witchcraft), Druidry, Asatru, non- aligned Paganism, Goddess worship, and shamanism. Names of appropriate deities are included on the basis of their familiarity and usage (e.g. Aradia and Diana in Wicca; Ceridwen within Druidry; Odin in Asatru), whilst technical terms and practices, such as invocation’ are given underlying definitions and cross-referenced to alternative definitions which are relevant to a specific religion. |

A Round-Heeled Woman: My Late-Life Adventures in Sex and Romance $15 “Round-heeled” is an old-fashioned label for a woman who is promiscuous—someone who nowadays might be called “easy.” It’s a surprising way for a cultured English teacher with a passion for the novels of Anthony Trollope to describe herself, but then that’s just the first of many surprises to be found in this poignant, funny, utterly unique memoir. Jane Juska is a smart, energetic divorcée who decided she’d been celibate too long, and placed the following personal ad in her favorite newspaper, The New York Review of Books:Before I turn 67—next March—I would like to have a lot of sex with a man I like. If you want to talk first, Trollope works for me. This closing reference was a nod to her favorite author, of course. The response was overwhelming, and Juska took a sabbatical from teaching to meet some of the men who had replied. And since her ad made it clear that she wasn’t expecting just hand-holding, her dates zipped from first base to home plate in record time. Juska is a totally engaging, perceptive writer, funny and frank about her exploits. It’s high time someone revealed the fact that older single people are as eager for sex and intimacy as their younger counterparts. Jane Juska’s brave, honest memoir will probably raise eyebrows and blood pressure, but it will undoubtedly appeal to the very large audience of grown-up readers who will be fascinated and inspired by her daring adventure. |

A Sallust Reader: Selections from Bellum Catilinae and Bellum Iugurthinum, and Historiae $19 This reader aims to introduce advanced Latin students to the works of Sallust, unique among Roman historians for several reasons. Because he uses standard vocabulary and uncomplicated syntax, Sallust is an accessible author at this level. Unlike other Roman historians whose subject matter was a distant past, Sallust writes about events that occurred in his lifetime. His roller-coaster career afforded him a unique opportunity to critique the inner mechanisms of contemporary Roman politics from the vantage of an outsider.Complete with introduction, text, commentary, vocabulary, and bibliography, this volume contains selections (556 lines) from the Bellum Catilinae, the Bellum Iugurthinum, and the Historiae. Selections include character sketches, conspiracy and its betrayal, ethnography, a political speech, and a description of a lavish banquet. Students are prepared for an eventual reading of the monographs in their entirety and become acquainted with the fragmentary Historiae. This reader teaches the rudiments of Latin prose by reinforcing transferable skills that can be applied to other prose authors. While attention is given to Sallust’s distinctive style, emphasis is placed on general structures so that students achieve comprehension and appreciation of Latin prose as a distinct-and majestic-art form in its own right.Special Features• Introduction to Sallust’s life, work, and style• Latin text selections (556 lines) from Sallust’s Bellum Catilinae (232 lines: 3.3-4.2; 4.3-5.8, 15; 22-25; 27.2-29; 40-41; 53-54), the Bellum Iugurthinum (304 lines: 6-7; 17-19; 84-86), and Historiae (20 lines: 2.70)• Grammatical and historical commentary printed at the back of the bookFor over 30 years Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers has produced the highest quality Latin and ancient Greek books. From Dr. Seuss books in Latin to Plato’s Apology, Bolchazy-Carducci’s titles help readers learn about ancient Rome |
