ebook, Ereaders, ipad or tablet?
I’m interested in getting some sort of tablet thing. I wanted to find out more about all the different kinds of choices there are out there and figure out which is best. I want a tablet, or ebook mostly to read books and magazines but would also like to surf web, download apps and whatnot, but those aren’t that important. I heard there was one where you buy it, and a subscription and get tons of unlimited books? I’m not sure if this thing exists or if so what exactly would I get? Which ones have best wifi and 3g and if they cost anything? The kindle or nook sounded good, but it didnt once I found out that still once you buy it, you buy each book and its only a little bit cheaper than the real book. Basically I dont really know anything about them and need some advice before I make a purchase. I don’t want to spend an arm and a leg but I really want a good one.
An ebook (Electronic Book) is an individual title of a book that you can read electronically on an Ereader, tablet, smartphone, computer, etc. An iPad is a particular tablet. So, the question comes down to whether to Buy An Ereader or a tablet.
Buy an E Ink ereader (Kindle 3, Nook Touch, Kobo Touch, Sony Reader, etc) if you want the best long-run reading experience. Reading from an E Ink display is as nice as reading from a physical book. Reading from the other devices is as good as reading from a computer monitor (fair). Note, however, that E Ink ereaders are lousy for browsing the web and are poor at running apps.
Buy a tablet, or an ereader with an LCD display, if you’re most interested in apps and games and browsing the web. Reading long-run text is as tolerable as it is with a computer monitor, and E Ink ereaders’ capabilities in the non-reading areas pale in comparison. LCD ereaders include Nook Color, Cruz R101, and PocketBook IQ 701. Tablets such as the iPad can also be used as ereader and are LCD based. (Some would argue that LCD ereaders are really budget tablets.)
Be careful of subscriptions offering “tons of unlimited books”. There are Free Ebook sources available on the web that offer free and legal downloads. I recommend using them and staying away from torrents and too-good-to-be-true offers as authors’ and publishers’ rights regarding for-purchase books should be respected (and are typically protected by DRM systems).
WiFi or WiFi+3G: Choose 3G if you wish to download ebooks or browse the web when away from a WiFi hotspot. An ereader or tablet with 3G support will be able to connect like a cell phone. Tablets have monthly 3G fees like cell phones. There is no monthly fee for Kindle’s 3G service. Note, though, that the web browser on Kindle isn’t so great. Also be aware that once an ebook is downloaded, neither WiFi nor 3G is needed to read it.
