1,001 Facts that Will Scare the S#*t Out of You: The Ultimate Bathroom Reader $5.23 Fact: Chocolate contains the alkaloid theobromine, which in high doses can be toxic to humans, and in even small amounts can kill dogs, parrots, horses, and cats. This means that despite its name, the Kit-Kat candy bar is not a recommended snack for your kitty-cat. I wonder how many cats have died because of this confusion.Fact: The most germ-laden place on your toilet isn’t the seat or even the bowl: It’s the handle. The solution: Don’t flush. Let the next guy worry about it.There are “just the facts”—and then there are just the facts that will frighten the bejeezus out of you. And thanks to this little gem of a bathroom book, you’ll never look at the world the same way again, without, er, dry heaving a little bit. From the sneaky fish that can swim up our genitals to the e coli bacteria lurking in the very water we drink, disturbing phenomena are everywhere we turn. Educational, entertaining, and undeniably horrifying, this book isn’t guaranteed to help you, um, go to the bathroom, but it’s certain to make your time there more . . . informed. |

1000 Events That Shaped the World $3.74 A fascinating sweep of global developments, this fact-filled book delivers what National Geographic has introduced into households for more than a century: The world and all that is in it. A thousand concise nuggets of text, each focused on one event and numbered chronologically, walk readers through time —from the first evidence of life 3.8 billion years ago to a just-discovered planet beyond our solar system that could harbor life as we know it.Accompanied by hundreds of illustrations and maps, the chosen events give insight into how and why our world has grown and changed. Did you know that the bow and arrow were developed nearly 5,000 years before pottery was made? (Events #16 and #19.) Or that Hamlet (#319) appeared at about the same time as Japan’s Kabuki theater (#320) and the first newspapers (#322)? There’s much more: Buddha’s birth, the understanding of sight, Mercator‘s mapmaking, Tsar Alexander’s freeing of serfs, the Battle of Gettysburg, the debut of toilet paper, D-Day, the first e-mail. A reader can open this book anywhere and find fascinating tidbits of history embellished with quick-read biographies, first-person accounts, and landmark paintings and photos. 1000 Events is sure to be a perennial backlist book, with its well-researched information appealing to readers of all ages. In the winning tradition of bestsellers Visual History of the World and Concise History of the World, this new volume presents facts in the easy-access format that people love. |

A Bloomsbury Group Reader $55.95 Because whenever they wrote the members of Bloomsbury tried to write well, there is an abundant variety of illuminating and delightful reading to be found in the shorter prose works of the Group’s novelists, biographers, critics, and even political economists. In A Bloomsbury Group Reader Professor Rosenbaum offers a representative selection of such writings by Virginia Woolf, E. M. Forster, Lytton Strachey, Roger Fry, Desmond MacCarthy, Clive Bell, Leonard Woolf, John Maynard Keynes, and Vanessa Bell. His Focus in this selection is not upon the lives of the Group but upon what finally must justify our interest in them: their work, in this instance, as writers.Bloomsbury writers particularly enjoyed the modernist mixing of forms, combining fact with fiction, polemics with aesthetics, humour with history. The pieces in this collection have therefore been arranged according to their genre and are complete in themselves, though some are parts of larger works. They pass from the objective to the subjective – from genres in which the writer’s presence is least felt in the work to those in which it may be dominant. The sequence from stories, biographies, and essays through reviews, polemics, and talks to travel writings and memoirs is framed by the forewords and afterwords written for some of Bloomsbury’s books.Several familiar texts, such as E. M. Forster’s ‘What I Believe’ or Virginia Woolf’s ‘Mr Bennett and Mrs Brown’, have been included here, but many others are far well known. Virginia Woolf’s biography of her great aunt, for example, has not yet been collected. While Desmond MacCarthy’s introduction to the First Post-Impressionist Exhibition catalogue and Leonard Woolf’s very early review of Freud are believed never to have been previously reprinted. |

A Certain Ambiguity: A Mathematical Novel (New in Paper) $7.98 “A Certain Ambiguity is an amazing narrative that glows with a vivid sense of the beauty and wonder of mathematics.”–Martin Gardner”This is a truly captivating thriller that will take you on a whirlwind tour to infinity–and beyond. But be warned: once you start reading, you won’t be able to put it aside until finished! A masterly-told story that weaves together criminal law, ancient and modern history, a young man’s quest to know his deceased grandfather-and some highly intriguing mathematics.”–Eli Maor, author of e: the Story of a Number and The Pythagorean Theorem: A 4,000-Year History”This rich and engaging novel follows the path that leads one young person to become a professional mathematician. By deftly blending the young man’s story with mathematical ideas and historical developments in the subject, the authors succeed brilliantly in taking the reader on a tour of some of the major highlights in the philosophy of mathematics. If that were not enough, the book also examines, through the minds of its characters, the natures of faith (religious and other) and truth. I am strongly thinking of building a university non-majors math course around this novel.”–Keith Devlin, Stanford University, author of The Math Gene”A Certain Ambiguity is a remarkably good effort to work through some fundamental issues in the philosophy of mathematics in the context of a novel. Crucial to the success of such a venture is creating characters and a plot that are strong enough to hold a reader’s interest. Suri and Bal succeed particularly well in the story of Vijay Sahni and Judge Taylor. This well-written book will, I believe, find readers not only among mathematicians, but in a wider audience that is intrigued by mathematical meaning.”–Joan Richards, Brown University”Suri and Bal convey the beauty and elegance–as well as the fascination–of basic mathematical concepts.”–Alexander Paseau, University of Oxf |

A Firm Determination To Do Or Die $19.95 The battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War, if not the turning point, not because the Federal Army of the Potomac won the battle, but because it simply did not lose; because General Robert E. Lee, commander of the famous Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, did not win. Make no mistake about it, Lee went north into Pennsylvania to destroy President Lincoln’s main army of operations, the Army of the Potomac, and then swing south to surround Washington, D. C. , the Federal capital, hoping it would lead to a negotiated settlement that finally recognized Southern independence from the United States. In this, Lee came close. I have created a historically accurate yet fictitious character around John Tricker, an actual member of the famous 114th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment (Collis’s Philadelphia Zouaves) to help tell a small but significant part of the story of this fateful campaign. The Philadelphia Zouaves, along with several other Federal regiments, held the very center of the Union line at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863, at a place that we now famously call “The Peach Orchard. ” Although John Tricker and his brother, Alfred, were actual members of Company B, 114th Pennsylvania, I know little to nothing about them. I don’t think anyone today does. I have simply combined my historical knowledge with my own combat experiences in Fallujah, Iraq, as an Iraqi Army advisor from 2005-06, to try to bring the desperate fight for the Peach Orchard Salient more to life for the average reader by using Sergeant John Tricker as a vehicle. I hope you enjoy the book and are inspired to read more about the Gettysburg Campaign and the Civil War in general. |

A Guide To English Literature $29.95 At first glance A Guide to English Literature may seem to be no more than a short bibliography of English literature with perhaps rather more extensive-and certainly more outspoken-comments on the principal editions, commentaries, biographies, and critical works than bibliographies usually provide. But it is something more: this guide contains long "inter-chapters" that provide reinterpretations of the principal periods of English literature in the light of modern research, as well as two final sections summarizing in unusual detail the literary criticism that exists in English and recent scholarship in the fi eld. Th e purpose of this book, then, is to provide the reader with convenient access to a disciplined study of the texts themselves. |

A Home Elsewhere: Reading African American Classics in the Age of Obama $12.48 In this series of interlocking essays, which had their start as lectures inspired by the presidency of Barack Obama, Robert Burns Stepto sets canonical works of African American literature in conversation with Obama’s Dreams from My Father. The elegant readings that result shed surprising light on unexamined angles of works ranging from Frederick Douglass’s Narrative to W. E. B. Du Bois’s Souls of Black Folk to Toni Morrison’s Song of Solomon.Stepto draws our attention to the concerns that recur in the books he takes up: how protagonists raise themselves, often without one or both parents; how black boys invent black manhood, often with no models before them; how protagonists seek and find a home elsewhere; and how they create personalities that can deal with the pain of abandonment. These are age-old themes in African American literature that, Stepto shows, gain a special poignancy and importance because our president has lived through these situations and circumstances and has written about them in a way that refreshes our understanding of the whole of African American literature.Stepto amplifies these themes in four additional essays, which investigate Douglass’s correspondence with Harriet Beecher Stowe; Willard Savoy’s novel Alien Land and its interracial protagonist; the writer’s understanding of the reader in African American literature; and Stepto’s account of his own schoolhouse lessons, with their echoes of Douglass’ and Obama’s experiences. |

Her long-time suitor and her servant both set to work trying to outdo each other in discovering the mystery of this house to let. They uncover the stories of several former occupants, all of which are enjoyable; Gaskell’s contribution, “A Manchester Marriage,” is outstanding. Overall, however, “A House to Let” amounts to a collection of short stories loosely strung together. In 1720, John Ball, ” late lecturer of St. Bartholomew’s the Less,” published the ” Art of dying well, written originally in Latin by Card. Bellarmine.” In his preface he says; ” I shall not distrust the reader’s judgment so far, as to imagine that he will dislike the Book on the account of the Authour, and not rather consider what he has wrote upon the subject, than who it was that wrote it, and then I persuade myself that I shall have no occasion to make any apology for the publication of it. For a wise and a good man will be willing to receive instruction from whatsoever hand it comes. . . . ” Any pretence that there have been other excellent discourses publish’d on the same subject, I believe, can be no reasonable objection against this; because the contemplation of death may be very well manag’d by different authors, as the same prospect may be finely drawn by different hands. ” Wherever my Author goes off into the Romish innovations, I have attempted to give him another turn. I must further own that I have taken some liberty, where it was proper, to enlarge his thoughts.” His book is, |

A Mary Wilkins Freeman Reader $2.99 “Mary Wilkins Freeman’s best stories are subtle, moving, and grounded in extraordinary detail.”-Susan Allen Toth. “Freeman is one of the most interesting and powerful writers of the nineteenth and early twentieth century. This collection includes several of her greatest stories, including ‘A New England Nun,’ ‘A Poetess,’ ‘The Revolt of “Mother,”‘ and ‘Old Woman Magoun,’ and will serve as a good introduction to her work.”-Josephine Donovan, University of Maine. Mary Wilkins Freeman (1852-1930), born in Randolph, Massachusetts, began to publish stories about New England in the early 1880s. In the following decades, Freeman drew widespread praise for her intimate portraits of women and her realistic depictions of rural New England life. She published short stories, essays, novels, plays, and children’s books. Her stories, written in a clear and direct prose, are remarkable for their unpretentious, sympathetic portrayals of the lives of ordinary New Englanders of Freeman’s era. Many of the stories depict rebellion against oppressive social and private conditions. Others describe conflicting desires for independence and lasting relationships. This volume of twenty-eight stories is the first to provide a representative sample of Freeman’s finest work, from all phases of her career. It makes plain why Freeman (in the words of editor Mary R. Reichardt) is widely recognized as an important figure “in the history of American women’s fiction . . . and the development of the American short story.” Mary R. Reichardt is an associate professor of English at the University of St. Thomas. She is the author of Mary Wilkins Freeman: A Study of the Short Fiction and A Web of Relationship: Women in the Short Fiction of Mary Wilkins Freeman and the editor of The Uncollected Stories of Mary Wilkins Freeman. |

A New Dictionary of Music $39.95 What is a fugue? What is the difference between a saxophone and a saxhorn? Who besides Puccini wrote an opera called La Boheme? In what year was the National Broadcasting Company Orchestra formed under Arturo Toscanini's direction? These and thousands of similar questions are answered in this comprehensive dictionary that remains unrivaled as a single-volume summary. A New Dictionary of Music is a basic reference work for anyone interested in music, whether performer or layman. It covers orchestral, solo, choral, and chamber music, opera, and (in its musical aspects) the ballet. There are entries for composers (with biographies and details of compositions); works well known by their titles, such as operas and symphonic poems; orchestras, performers and conductors of importance today; musical instruments (including those of the dance and brass bands); and technical terms. English names and terms are used whenever possible, but foreign terms in general use are cross-referenced. Particular importance has been attached to bringing the reader abreast of new musical developments. The composers and musical works chosen were those most likely to be encountered. Where an opera is given an entry, a brief explanation of the title follows. Similarly explication is provided for other works bearing literary or otherwise allusive titles. Among performers and conductors, only the following are included: those who, although dead, continue to be prominent through recorded performances (e.g., Gigli); the highest-ranking international artists of today, plus a very few apparently on the verge of attaining that rank; a few who, though not necessarily at the very head of their profession, are closely associated with composers in bringing out new works, or are conductors in charge of important orchestras.Arthur Jacobs is well-known both in his native England and in the United States as a critic, author, translator of librettos, lecturer, and |
