Kindle Covers and Kindle Cases – A Buyer’s Guide

The Amazon Kindle Ebookreader is certainly one of the “must have” gadgets you can buy at the moment. It is light, portable, a pleasure to read on and it stores hundreds of books. In fact, you can store your entire book collection on the Kindle in much the same way as you can carry around your music collection on an mp3 player.

Once you have a Kindle it is important that you protect it with a sturdy cover or case. There is a massive variety of Kindle cases and Kindle covers on the market right now and the choice can be a little bewildering. However, the range of products can be broken down easily as follows.

If your reader is likely to get thrown in your bag or case every day and may possibly get splashed with water every now and again then a Kindle sleeve would be your best choice. These act like large socks, allowing you to slide the Kindle in through one end which can then be fastened down, either magnetically or with velcro. Many of the Kindle sleeves that you can buy are made of neoprene, which is an artificial soft cushioning material that is cheap to make and provides excellent resistance against the bumps and knocks that your Kindle might face. As a result, many Kindle sleeves are inexpensive to buy and they do the job very well of protecting your precious ebookreader. Other sleeves are knitted rather than being made of neoprene, so these tend to resemble large socks more than any other.

The other type you can buy are the leather and leather-look Kindle covers. When you slide your Kindle into these you will be giving your Kindle the look and feel of a leather-bound book. In some cases the attachment mechanism is by virtue of two small hooks which integrate into the recesses of the Kindle on its left hand side, whereas in other cases the Kindle slides into the inside cover of the case that is specially designed with cutouts on its front to ensure that the screen, buttons and sockets of the Kindle are fully exposed and easy to access. In other versions of the Kindle case the reader is mounted on the inside of the cover by an elasticated strap in each of the four corners.

You can also buy Kindle skins which serve in the main to transform the look and style of the Kindle rather than providing it with any protection. There are many designs available on the Internet from a variety of companies. The skins are self-adhesive and can be applied in much the same way as you would with a screen protector. A key feature is that they are removable so you are not stuck with your first choice if you ever decide to change it. If you are thinking of purchasing a skin for your Kindle then you would need a case too in order to ensure that it is properly protected.
