Do I Have to pay to get ebooks on my Sony Reader?
k, so im thinkin of getting the sony reader, but idk if i have to pay to get the books after i buy the reader. so does anyone know if i have to pay?
Yes, you need to pay for books for any ebook readers, including Sony Reader. However, there are some websites that provide free books which are in the public domain, they are readable on most ebook readers. Here is a site with around 30,000 free books:

I love my Kindle 2 very much. Between the Kindle and the Sony Reader, I’ll suggest you to go for the Kindle instead of Sony. The Kindle is better because it has free wireless and text-to-speech function. There are more ebooks you can find available for the Kindle, and books on the Kindle are quite a lot cheaper too. There are some good comparison between them here:

And in case you don’t know, Amazon has recently put a price slash on the Kindle 2, and it adds in international wireless access and native PDF support… So take the chance if you want it.
Hope it helps

Arab, Muslim, Woman $170 Given a long history of representation by others, what themes and techniques do Arab Muslim women writers, filmmakers and visual artists foreground in their presentation of postcolonial experience? Lindsey Moore’s groundbreaking book demonstrates ways in which women appropriate textual and visual modes of representation, often in cross-fertilizing ways, in challenges to Orientalist/colonialist, nationalist, Islamist, and ‘multicultural’ paradigms. She provides an accessible but theoretically-informed analysis by foregrounding tropes of vision, visibility and voice; post-nationalist melancholia and mother/daughter narratives; transformations of ‘homes and harems’; and border crossings in time, space, language, and media. In doing so, Moore moves beyond notions of speaking or looking ‘back’ to encompass a diverse feminist poetics and politics and to emphasize ethical forms of representation and reception.Aran, Muslim, Woman is distinctive in the eclectic body of work that it brings together. Discussing Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, the Palestinian territories, and Tunisia, as well as postcolonial Europe, Moore argues for better integration of Arab Muslim contexts in the postcolonial canon. In a book for readers interested in women’s studies, history, literature, and visual media, we encounter work by Assia Djebar, Mona Hatoum, Fatima Mernissi, Ahlam Mosteghanemi, Nawal el Saadawi, Leila Sebbar, Zineb Sedira, Ahdaf Soueif, Moufida Tlatli, Fadwa Tuqan, and many other women. |

Language, Culture, and Teaching $46.95 Tremendous cultural and linguistic diversity is evident in our schools today. This text by one of today’s best-known and most highly respected multicultural educators presents examples of real-life dilemmas about diversity that teachers will face in their own classrooms; ideas about how language, culture, and teaching are linked; and ways to engage with these ideas through reflection and collaborative inquiry. A thoughtful integration of articles and book chapters published by Dr. Nieto along with creative pedagogical features, Language, Culture, and Teaching: Critical Perspectives for a New Century: • explores how language and culture are connected to teaching and learning in educational contexts;• examines the sociocultural and sociopolitical contexts of language and culture to understand how they may affect student learning and achievement;• analyzes the implications of linguistic and cultural diversity for school reform and educational equity;• encourages critical reflection on classroom practices related to linguistic and cultural diversity; and • offers in each chapter critical questions to help readers build on the knowledge they have gained by analyzing the concepts further; classroom activities that provide suggestions for applying what they have learned to their own teaching context; and community activities suggesting projects beyond the classroom context, in settings ranging from the school or district to the state or national level. Learning, Teaching, and Community $40.95 This volume brings together established and new scholarly voices to explore how participatory and situated approaches to learning can contribute to educational innovation. The contributors’ critical examinations of educational programming and engagements provide insights into how educators, youth, families, and community members understand and enact their commitments to diversity and equitable access. Collectively, these essays complicate notions of community, alerting readers to ways in which community can be constructed other than in geographical and ethnoracial terms–as alliances and collaborations of individuals joining together to accomplish or negotiate shared agendas. The focus on agency combined with social context, a dialectic to which all of the authors speak, enlarges and invigorates our sense of what is pedagogically possible in societies characterized by diversity and flux. *Part I, “Linking Pedagogy to Communities,” focuses on dynamic initiatives where practitioners collaborate with community members and other professionals as they acknowledge and build on the cultural, linguistic, and intellectual resources of ethnic-minority students and their communities. *Part II, “Professional Learning for Diversity,” centers on the authors’ experiences in facilitating opportunities for working with prospective and practicing teachers to develop situated pedagogies, highlighting both the challenges that emerge and the transformations that occur. *Part III, “Learning in Community (and Community in Learning), illustrates how educational innovation can extend beyond the realm of schools and classrooms by elucidating ways in which individuals construct learning venues inout-of-school settings. Learning, Teaching, and Community: Contributions of Situated and Participatory Approaches to Educational Innovation is a compelling and timely text ideally suited for courses focused on teacher education and development, informal learning, equity and |

Minority Status, Oppositional Culture and Schooling $56.95 This book is the definitive and final presentation of John Ogbu’s cultural ecological model and the many debates that his work has sparked during the past decade. The theory and empirical foundation of Ogbu’s scholarship, which some have mistakenly reduced to the acting white hypothesis, is fully presented and re-visited in this posthumous collection of his new writings plus the works of over 20 scholars. Ogbu’s own chapters present how his ideas about minority education and culture developed. Readers will find in these chapters the theoretical roots of his cultural ecological model. The book is organized as a dialogue between John Ogbu and the scholarly community, including his most ardent critics; Ogbu’s own work can be read at the same time as his critics have their say. Minority Status, Oppositional Culture, and Schooling examines content, methodological, and policy issues framing the debate on academic achievement, school engagement, and oppositional culture. It brings together in one volume, for the first time, some of the most critical works on these issues as well as examples of programs aimed at re-engagement. In addition to African Americans, it also looks at school engagement among Native American and Latino students. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the study of the academic achievement gap. |

‘Work Hard, Study…and Keep Out of Politics!’: Adventures and Lessons from an Unexpected Public Life $19.99 White House chief of staff twice over, former secretary of state, past secretary of the treasury, and campaign leader for three different candidates in five successful campaigns—few people have lived and breathed politics as deeply or for as long as James Baker. Now, with candor, down-home Texas storytelling, and more than a few surprises, Baker opens up about his thirty-five years behind the scenes. Beginning in 1975 with the Ford administration, in a job procured for him by friend and tennis partner George H. W. Bush, Baker was in the thick of American politics. He recounts the inside story of Ford’s rejection of Reagan as a running mate in 1976 with the same insight he has into Reagan’s rejection of Ford four years later. When the White House was plunged into turmoil after the Reagan assassination attempt, he was there, and his stories take readers deeper into those chaotic days. Baker was on hand for the George H. W. Bush campaign’s battle over running mate Dan Quayle and, more recently, he was again on the front row as George W. Bush fought it out in Florida. Spellbinding and frank, his stories are the ones between the lines of our history books. In this new edition, Baker also responds for the first time in print to the George W. Bush administration’s reaction to the Iraq Study Group Report, written with his input. Baker is very qualified to comment on the political operation of the current administration, and his new writing for this paperback brings the full weight of his experience to bear. |

…And Turn It Again $9.99 In his new book, …and turn it again, author Simeon Maslin introduces his readers to a first-century sage who taught: “Turn it and turn it again, for everything is in it.” That ancient sage was referring to Hebrew Scripture, and Maslin continues the time-honored rabbinic process of turning those sacred verses, turning them yet again, and finding in them inspiring, poignant, and often humorous lessons for our day.In praise of …and turn it againRabbi Maslin is one of the most gifted practitioners of the rabbinic art of connecting ancient texts and modern concerns. His vignettes shimmer with insight, humor and compassion for the human condition. – Rabbi Harold Kushner, author, When Bad Things Happen to Good People By spinning and respinning tales from our ancient texts and connecting them to the real issues of our lives, Maslin links us to our people, our past, and our God. This book is a treasure by one of the great teachers of our generation. – Rabbi Eric H. Yoffie, President, Union for Reform Judaism In this remarkably insightful collection, Rabbi Maslin brilliantly converts his favorite biblical verses into highly fluent and pleasurable prose to stimulate and challenge his readers. This is the ageless rabbinic art of teaching practiced to perfection, a significant addition to the Jewish exegetical tradition. – Prof. David Ruderman, Director, Center for Advanced Jewish Studies, U. of Penn. |

Readers unfortunate enough not to have read the novels will be glad to know that these new stories are independent of them (and of each other). However, some of the beloved Motherlode characters are present here, including Tim Rinnissen, only slightly less naïïve than he was as a teenager. (By the way, Tim has married, of all people, Bixenta, “Binky” Zdenek.) Most of the crimes get solved, no matter whether they happened in or near Motherlode, Montana or in someplace Tim has probably never even heard of. |

The solution, says Will Davis Jr., is to stop believing the lies and start believing the things Jesus did say.In 10 Things Jesus Never Said, Davis unmasks commonly believed myths about our relationship with God and shows readers how to replace this pervasive theology of failure with the truth of how Jesus really feels about them. Discussion questions at the end of each chapter help small groups or individuals apply these truths to their current situations. Anyone who has ever felt that they didn’t measure up to God’s standards will love this freeing exploration of grace and forgiveness. |

100 Days and 99 Nights $6.99 Dad says because of the army he stood shoulder to shoulder with polar bears and watched the sun rise over the frozen fields of Alaska, which sounds really exciting. And because of the Army he slept in sludge, shoulder to shoulder with snakes and watched the sun set over the swamps of Alabama — which does not. In a timely, but not politically charged way, author Alan Madison looks at the way a family copes with having a parent away on a 100 day, 99 night military tour of duty through the eyes of the very loveable Esmerelda (Esme) Swishback McCarthur. Esme wants to be good while her dad is away. In fact, she feels like it’s her duty to be good. But being good can be hard, especially if you have a little brother like Ike. By following Esme’s story, as she awaits her father’s return, readers will see how heroism can translate to every member of a family. Aside from the military families that this book serves, readers who wonder what it would be like if their mother, father, brother, or sister was sent away will relate to Esme’s quiet strength and candor and will understand her worry about what could happen. This story has the potential to speak to readers on a personal level and to turn a concept that seems so hard to grasp—war—into one that feels much more personal. |

1066: The Hidden History in the Bayeux Tapestry $11.99 For more than 900 years the Bayeux Tapestry has preserved one of history’s greatest dramas: the Norman Conquest of England, culminating in the death of King Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Historians have held for centuries that the majestic tapestry trumpets the glory of William the Conqueror and the victorious Normans. But is this true? In 1066, a brilliant piece of historical detective work, Andrew Bridgeford reveals a very different story that reinterprets and recasts the most decisive year in English history.Reading the tapestry as if it were a written text, Bridgeford discovers a wealth of new information subversively and ingeniously encoded in the threads, which appears to undermine the Norman point of view while presenting a secret tale undetected for centuries-an account of the final years of Anglo-Saxon England quite different from the Norman version.Bridgeford brings alive the turbulent 11th century in western Europe, a world of ambitious warrior bishops, court dwarfs, ruthless knights, and powerful women. 1066 offers readers a rare surprise-a book that reconsiders a long-accepted masterpiece, and sheds new light on a pivotal chapter of English history. |

12 Bad Habits That Hold Good People Back $13.99 Have you ever wondered why some people seem to rise effortlessly to the top, while others are stuck in the same job year after year? Have you ever felt you are falling short of your career potential? Have you wondered if some of the things you do–or don’t do–at work might be hamstringing your ambitions? In The 12 Bad Habits That Hold Good People Back, James Waldroop and Timothy Butler identify the twelve habits that–whether you are a retail clerk or a law firm partner, work in technology or in a factory–are almost guaranteed to hold you back. The fact is, most people learn their greatest lessons not from their successes but from their mistakes. The 12 Bad Habits That Hold Good People Back offers the flip side to Stephen Covey’s approach in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, zeroing in on the most common behavior that can impede a career. Based on over twenty years of research as business psychologists, the authors claim that the reasons people fail in their jobs are the same everywhere. Only after these detrimental behaviors have been identified can the patterns that limit career advancement be broken. Using real-life accounts of clients they have worked with at Harvard and as executive coaches at such companies as GTE, Sony, GE, and McKinsey & Co., Waldroop and Butler offer invaluable–and in some cases, job-saving–step-by-step advice on how readers can change their behavior to get back on track. For anyone seeking to achieve his or her career ambitions, The 12 Bad Habits That Hold Good People Back is a powerful tool for unleashing true potential. |

Foreign Service officer, is thrown into a maelstrom of agony when she learns a New York bound flight from England exploded soon after takeoff, like a grim Lockerbie Two. Casey fears that her lover Stefan Krajewski, a Polish operative for Danish Defense Intelligence, was on the ill-fated flight and promptly flies to Europe to learn the truth. But she is swiftly embroiled in a twisted series of events that paint her as a terrorist conspirator and a suspect in the airline bombing.
