His art, and maybe more importantly his approach to art, have taken him out of the galleries and museums into the public arena. However, blues songs are presented in a way to make audiences feel better about their own situation in life. This is because they encourage listeners to take control of their lives and move past any hardship. Due to this, blues music is very effective at connecting with its audience. Central Park $0.99 Learn about the history of Central Park in New York with iMinds Travel’s insightful fast knowledge series. Central Park is a haven for New Yorkers and a tourist’s paradise. Nestled among some of the tallest buildings in one of the most densely populated cities in the world, Central Park stretches out, taking up 840 acres of prime real estate. It is first and foremost an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Some may think the city was built around the park, but it is entirely man-made, a tribute to modern architecture and landscaping. And it might not exist today had the people of New York not fought for it for more than 150 years. As early as 1844, there were calls by the poet William Cullen Bryant and other prominent New York residents for a public park in the marshy hinterland just north of the city proper. Bryant and pre-eminent architect and landscape designer Andrew Jackson Downing led the push for land to be put aside before it was entirely swallowed by buildings. With public support they managed to get politicians on both sides to agree to the idea. In 1856 the city bought most of the land the park now sits on for 5 million dollars. That’s about one hundred million dollars in today’s money! At the time, the land was mostly vacant scrubland and rocky outcrops. It was also used as a garbage dump. When the city acquired the land, surveyors and police were sent in to clear the area; and this often meant ejecting squatters and their goats or pigs!iMinds will tell you the story behind the place with its innovative travel series, transporting the armchair traveller or getting you in the mood for discover on route to your destination. iMinds brings targeted knowledge to your eReading device with short information segments to whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind. |

Colosseum $0.99 Learn about the history of the Colosseum in Rome with iMinds Travel’s insightful fast knowledge series. Two thousand years ago the mighty Roman Empire spanned most of Europe, Asia Minor and North Africa. At its heart was the capital city of Rome, the city to which ‘all roads led’. Inside this city, the great ruins of the Colosseum are a lasting reminder of the majesty of this great empire. But the gigantic sports arena that is the Colosseum also reveals a dark side of ancient Rome. For the arena’s purpose was as a ground for gladiatorial combat. And in its wildly popular four-hundred-year history, the Colosseum would witness the deaths of thousands of humans and animals. The Colosseum was built by the Emperor Vespasian between 72 and 80AD. It was built from Travertine stone and its builders were brought to Rome from Judaea. After a revolt in Judaea was suppressed by the Roman government, a large amount of Jews were brought to Rome as slaves to construct the arena. Vespasian had it built in the grounds of the ‘Domus Aurea’, or ‘Golden House’. The Golden House was built by the emperor Nero in the first century. It was actually a collection of many buildings over a great area. The ruins of many of these can still be visited today on the Esquiline Hill next to the Colosseum. Vespasian belonged to the Flavian dynasty, and so the Colosseum was originally called the “Flavian Amphitheatre”.iMinds will tell you the story behind the place with its innovative travel series, transporting the armchair traveller or getting you in the mood for discover on route to your destination. iMinds brings targeted knowledge to your eReading device with short information segments to whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind. |

Conflict Diamonds $0.99 Learn about the history and politics of Conflict Diamonds with iMinds insightful knowledge series. ‘Conflict diamonds’ are precious gems that have been sold on the black market to finance violent rebel groups, terrorists or oppressive governments. They almost always originate from poor, underdeveloped countries located on the African continent. It is estimated that conflict diamonds account for up to 15 percent of the world’s traded diamonds. Their existence was first brought to the world’s attention by the international human rights organisation Global Witness, with its report on diamonds that were being illegally exported out of the war-torn African country, Angola. Angola was gripped by civil war from 1992-2002. During this time, rebel groups, most notably the ‘National Union for the Total Independence of Angola,’ or UNITA, were unlawfully mining and selling much of the country’s diamond resources. This money was then used in part by the rebels to fund brutal attacks on innocent Angolans, and each other. iMinds brings targeted knowledge to your eReading device with short information segments to whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind. iMinds unique fast-learning modules as seen in the Financial Times, Wired, Vogue, Robb Report, Sky News, LA Times, Mashable and many others.. the future of general knowledge acquisition. |

Dante’s Inferno $0.99 Learn about the story of Dante’s Inferno with iMinds insightful knowledge series.”Midway upon the journey of our life, I found myself in a forest dark, For the straightforward pathway had been lost.”So begins the classic text of the Inferno, a medieval poem written in 14th century Italy. Along with its sequels, Purgatorio and Paradiso, it makes up the classic Divine Comedy. But what is the poem about? In the Inferno, the narrator of the tale travels through hell. This may strike the modern reader as a very strange premise for a story, but for medieval Europeans, religious texts were in abundance. Medieval Europe was characterised by devout Christianity, and so the Inferno concerns a Christian idea of what hell would be like. As the poem is religious, it is highly allegorical. So there are not many characters that the reader gets to know very well. However, the narrator is an important exception to this.iMinds brings targeted knowledge to your eReading device with short information segments to whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind. |

A doomsday cult is a quasi-religious group that believe the end of the world is imminent.Doomsday cults are typically led by charismatic messiah-figures, who teach that their cult holds the secret to surviving the apocalypse. More recently the term has come to include cults who carry out acts of violence or terrorism in an attempt to bring about revolutionary change.Despite increased media attention in the last thirty years, doomsday cults are not a recent phenomenon. Sanskrit texts from Ancient India suggest that doomsday cults existed in prehistory. In what is now the region of Kashmir in northern India, a demoness named “Long-Tongue” was worshipped by villagers in the hope she would prevent the end of the world by eating human waste. By the sixth century AD, Long-Tongue was adapted by Hindu tradition and became the goddess Kali. Easter Island $0.99 Learn about the history of Easter Island in South America with iMinds Travel’s insightful fast knowledge series. Easter Island lies 3,700 km, or 2,299 from the nearest continent and is one of the most isolated places on the planet. Though it is so far removed from the rest of the world, Easter Island has more than its fair share of local history. Also commonly known as Rapa Nui, the island is probably most famous for the giant statues called Moai that populate the island, mainly near the shores. Mystery surrounds these enormous monoliths and they continue to baffle archaeologists trying to piece together the story of the Island. Today, the small, peaceful looking island belies its bloody and difficult history. It is unknown exactly where the first islanders came from, but it is likely they arrived from another pacific island, such as the Marquesas, the Mangarevas, or even the Cook Islands. Estimates place their arrival at sometime in the eighth century. According to local oral history, the first settlers were led by the Polynesian King Hotu Matua in the year 450AD and landed on the north coast at Anakena. From there the numbers grew steadily and the land was cultivated. During this time the giant Moai were built and erected on their platforms, known as Ahu, along the coast.iMinds will tell you the story behind the place with its innovative travel series, transporting the armchair traveller or getting you in the mood for discover on route to your destination. iMinds brings targeted knowledge to your eReading device with short information segments to whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind. |

Each year it attracts millions of visitors making it the worlds most visited paid monument. It is both a global icon and the symbol of an entire nation. Yet, it was actually intended to be taken down and sold as scrap metal just a few decades after its erection. We are talking about the Eiffel Tower; the postcard image of France and a modern engineering masterpiece. In 1889, France would celebrate the 100th anniversary of the start of the French Revolution. Planning for the celebrations began in 1885 and organisers soon came up with the idea of building a huge monument on the Champ de Mars. They wanted it to surpass the recently completed Washington monument which had been erected in the United States to commemorate President Washington. This rival building stood at 557 feet, or 170 metres, and was, at the time, the tallest building in the world. It had taken over 30 years to build. But the French had less than three years to complete work on a structure that would eventually be almost twice this height.iMinds will tell you the story behind the place with its innovative travel series, transporting the armchair traveller or getting you in the mood for discover on route to your destination. iMinds brings targeted knowledge to your eReading device with short information segments to whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind. |

Dinosaurs roamed the earth, graced the skies and swam through the water for about 140 million years, before they met their end some 65 million years ago. Their skeletons lay buried beneath the earth and they were forgotten about for millions of years. Then, large fossils were found between the 1670s and the 1820s. A number of British scientists, including a doctor called Gideon Mantell and a scholar called William Buckland, studied the large fossils and concluded they came from a huge reptile that Buckland named ‘megalosaurus’ or ‘giant lizard’. As further study into large bone fossils took place, it became apparent that a whole group of giant lizards had actually once roamed the earth. Galapagos Islands $0.99 Learn about the history of the Galapagos Islands in South America with iMinds Travel’s insightful fast knowledge series. Home to the giant tortoises that gave them their name, the Galapagos Islands lie one thousand kilometres off the coast of mainland Ecuador. The famous group of islands remained untouched by humanity for thousands of years, being only charted in the seventeenth century. Two hundred years later the stunning wildlife provided Charles Darwin with the perfect place to work on his theory of evolution. Darwin’s book ‘The Origin of the Species’ was partially inspired by his trip to the Galapagos and his theory is now widely accepted as the explanation for our human existence. The Galapagos Islands have a rich history both before and after their first documented discovery in 1535. As barren volcanic islands formed millions of years ago, the Galapagos were never attached to the mainland. That means the life forms that exist there would have to have made their way there travelling by air or by sea. Birds and sea creatures therefore richly inhabit the islands. Any flora and other types of fauna such as reptiles and small mammals would have made it to the island by other means. They might have come in the stomachs or stuck to the feet of birds in the case of insects and plant seeds, or else carried over on flotsam or floating vegetation. However they arrived, reptiles and mammals are there in abundance. One of the ways the island is unique is that it has no large native mammals.iMinds will tell you the story behind the place with its innovative travel series, transporting the armchair traveller or getting you in the mood for discover on route to your destination. iMinds brings targeted knowledge to your eReading device with short information segments to whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind. |

Despite their differences, the various IRA groups have at least a common goal: the unification of Ireland and an end to occupation of Northern Ireland by the United Kingdom. The IRA started out of a desire within Ireland for self-administration at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1914, the British Parliament passed an act that sought to provide “Home Rule” for Ireland as part of the United Kingdom. But the onset of World War One delayed implementation of the act, and the Home Rule outlined by the act was limited, causing heated debate amongst the Irish.
